How to Find Your Perfect Mattress Size

Moving can be expensive, and we know how tempting it can be to buy a cheap mattress for your bedroom when you are furnishing your first home to save money. But your sleep is important. A high-quality mattress promises to give you a better night’s sleep than a similar cheaper low-quality mattress you found online ever could. Moreover, in buying a quality mattress, you are actually saving money in the long run. A quality mattress can last for over a decade with the right care, whereas a cheap piece may only last for 5 years with regular maintenance, so we always recommend that our customers invest in a high-quality mattress for their bedroom.

But how do you find your perfect mattress size?

While it will ultimately come down to personal preference, here are a few things to keep in mind when choosing your mattress size.

1. Room Size

In order to determine what size of mattress you need for your bedroom, you must measure your space. The most accurate way to do this is by using a tape measure to measure the dimensions of your bedroom. Note the length of each wall on a piece of paper and use these dimensions to sketch out a floor plan of your bedroom. Don’t forget to mark down the positions of any outlets, doors, or windows as this will make arranging the furniture in your room easier. When this floor plan is complete, it is much easier to visualize your space, and since you can draw in furniture in its actual size, you can easily see what size of bed will allow you to make the best use of your space.

To avoid having a cramped space and still have room for nightstands, you must leave a minimum of two feet of empty space on each side and the end of the bed. You will need a minimum of 10 inches between a dresser and the bed to give you easy access to drawers.

2. Sleeping Partners

If you share a bed, you must speak to your partner about your mattress preferences before you look into mattress sizing. If you prefer a soft mattress, then we suggest narrowing your search to include only memory foam mattresses. However, if your partner struggles to sleep due to overheating, you may need to consider purchasing a hybrid mattress. List your preferences and then do research into different types of mattresses. From here, you can look into sizing. Most couples usually opt for a queen mattress since it gives you both the ability to stretch out without touching each other and waking one another up during the night. However, if you’re sharing the bed with kids or the family dog, you might want to size up, especially if both you and your partner prefer having more personal space and legroom.

3. Pricing

The bigger mattress, the bigger the price tag. You must factor the price of potential mattresses into your budget. If you buy a large mattress, you also need to purchase a large bed frame which can drive up the price of your purchase even further. If you are sure this investment is worth it, remember that sheets also increase in price for bigger mattresses, so start saving now!

The Complete Mattress Size Guide

Once you have considered the above, you have all the information you need about yourself, your lifestyle, and your bedroom to choose the right size of mattress for your living room. We have listed the five sizes of mattress we recommend to our customers most frequently below, along with whom we think they are most suited for to help you make your choice.

The Twin Mattress

The twin mattress is the smallest mattress on this list. At only 39” x 75”, twin mattresses are ideal for adults who sleep alone and for children that are transitioning from a crib to their first bed. A twin mattress is also the best mattress size for bunk beds since the majority of bunk beds are made specifically for this size of mattress.

Due to their size, twin mattresses tend to be the cheapest option for any given mattress style. And since their narrow shape means they take up the least amount of floor space in a bedroom, they are suitable for people with smaller bedrooms that want to make the most of their space.

However, twin mattresses are too narrow for two people to sleep on comfortably. This means we do not recommend this size of mattress to couples or anyone who lets their pet sleep in their bed. Moreover, if you are taller than 6′ 2’’, you will probably be too tall for a twin-size mattress.

The Full Mattress

Larger than the twin mattress, the full mattress is a mid-level sized mattress perfect for single adults or young sleepers who would benefit from extra room to move around in bed. If you have two young children that share a room, you can use a twin-over-full or full-over-full bunk bed to save floor space. A full-size mattress is also well suited to college students sharing dorm rooms and young adults with smaller bedrooms. If you are furnishing a guest bedroom that also doubles as a play space for your children or a home office, we think full mattresses are a perfect choice since the majority of small mattress frames include under-the-bed storage drawers. This means by choosing a smaller mattress for your space, you are doubling the amount of storage space in your room.

Unfortunately, since the average full mattress is sized at 54” x 75”, they are still too narrow for most couples to sleep comfortably on. But if you are both still sleepers and live in a cool climate, you can choose to save on space and purchase a full mattress for your bedroom. The same can be said for the guest room. Since this space won’t be inhabited every night, you don’t have to worry about your guests having a fitful night’s sleep on a too-small mattress. Moreover, since full mattresses are considerably cheaper than the mattresses listed below, you can use the money you save to buy a gorgeous, functional bed frame.

The Queen Mattress

This is the most popular size of mattress. At 60” x 80”, the queen mattress is a spacious mattress that can cradle two people with room to spare. We recommend them to those that value their floor space as much as they value their comfort. With a queen-sized mattress, you don’t have to sacrifice too much space in your bedroom to be comfortable. We also recommend this size mattress to those with young children and pets since they can accommodate nighttime visits from young kids, and you’ll still have a little extra wiggle room if your dogs or cats like to hog the bed. Still, this size of mattress is still compact enough for a single sleeper to justify this purchase. Thanks to its popularity, there are hundreds of styles of queen mattresses on the market.

However, due to its length, we do not recommend this size of mattress to our taller customers since they will not be able to fully stretch out without their feet dangling off the end of the bed.

The King Mattress

If you value your own space, a king-sized mattress is an ideal choice. With a king-sized mattress, both you and your partner each get about the width of a twin mattress to spread out and sleep on since the average king-sized bed is 76” x 80’’. When our customers come in looking for a new mattress for their master bedroom, more often than not, they feel that they have outgrown their old queen mattress. We always recommend a king-sized mattress to couples who want space to snuggle together in bed on their days off and growing families who want to make sure they have enough space in their bed for their children to pile in on a Saturday morning. There’s an exciting range of options available for shoppers seeking a new king-size mattress since this size of mattress is almost as popular as the queen-sized mattress.

But if the bedroom you are furnishing is small, we recommend that you do not purchase a king-sized mattress and instead opt for a queen mattress to save on space.

The California King Mattress

If you have the space for it, we always recommend the California king mattress to our customers. At 72” x 84”, this type of mattress offers a luxurious amount of space on which to sleep – ideal for couples who need extra room in their bed and families that like to squeeze in bed together on Sunday mornings.

California king mattresses are also best for individuals who are taller and need the extra length on their mattresses so they can fully stretch out in their sleep. If you are furnishing a bedroom that is longer than it is wide, the length of this type of mattress is also an advantage. But for this reason, we cannot recommend this type of mattress to those with a medium or small-sized room since it would not be able to accommodate nightstands, dressers, or any other pieces of important bedroom furniture in addition to the bed frame and mattress. If you are under 6’5”, a queen or king-sized mattress should provide you with enough length to sleep comfortably.

Mattress Size Vs. Bed Frame Size

When you are purchasing a bed for your bedroom, you must ensure that it fits in your room with space to spare. This means that you must know the dimensions of potential mattresses and their corresponding bed frames.

The mattress you buy should always correspond with the bed that you have purchased. For instance, if you have a king-sized bed frame, you should get a king-sized mattress. It’s impossible to give exact dimensions since style impacts the sizing, and some bed frames include headboards and footboards, which add to the overall size of the bed.

Divan beds without a headboard have the same dimensions as the mattress it was designed for, as the mattress will sit flush on top of the divan base. Therefore you will not need to do any extra calculations when you are shopping.

Wooden bed frames are more often than not a few inches bigger than the mattress they were designed for, meaning that you can tuck your comforter around the edges of the frame.

Upholstered bed frames are among the most popular type of bed frames. However, due to its popularity, the dimensions of this type of frame differ hugely depending on its shape, the amount of detail in the stitching, and the fabric the frame was upholstered with.

We recommend selecting your preferred mattress style before you purchase a bed frame. You should always check the dimensions of the bed frame before purchasing it to ensure it fits in the room with enough space to move around the sides so you can make your bed quickly and easily every morning. But if you have purchased a bed frame before you have purchased a mattress, we recommend that you measure the frame’s interior to see what style of mattress will fit the best.
